Static Electricity

We have moved from our Simple Machines chapter into Electricity and last week we had a fun time experimenting with it.  The Switched on Schoolhouse lesson plans came with a few ideas to try, and I just found another website that has a few more experiment ideas.

We took two balloons that were neutrally charged and rubbed them with wool, giving them each a charge.  Like-charges repel from one another so we got to watch our balloons try their best to stay as far away from each other as possible.

Here you see Carson rubbing one of the balloons on my wool coat.

And here you see him holding the two charged balloons by string and no matter how close he got the strings, the balloons wouldn’t touch one another.

About Jennifer

"Yes, they're all mine." The answer to the question I hear most often.
